As I work on a project I often find that a part of the music, usually hidden amongst the other sounds, becomes an inspiration in itself. That sound or part of the music becoming the basis for another project
MooN evolved out of such a situation, with part of the sound from an earlier release called ‘Ydd Hwnt y Seren a Llygedin’ (Realms Beyond the Stars and Light).
The first track – ‘Silver Wheel’ – developed in this way from the background of a track. It is a very static, still soundscape. The music drifts and circles like the phases of the Moon, feeling as if it is slowly moving but somehow always the same.
I wanted to work on it further, but struggled to add anything as the extra sounds just seemed a distraction and at odds with the atmosphere of the music.
Then, after watching an eclipse of the moon in March 2007, experiencing the darkening, I knew where I wanted to go with the music and ‘Sphynx’ circled into being.
Sphynx starts the same as Silver Wheel, but slowly changes in the middle to something else, before returning back again – just as the Moon does in an eclipse.
MooN was originally intended only to be shared via Soundcloud and the odd private CD. I have included the front and back cover art for printing if you wish to burn the music to a CD.
The music was recorded on Roland VS2480, Korg D16 using Novation Supernova rack synth and acoustic sound sources.
I managed to film one cold full Moon night and the resulting short video, with the music is available on youtube. - www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OjXI6vRFco
After creating the album I sent Oophoi the music as a starting point for a collaborative project we had been discussing. He too found it difficult to add anything, but the piece started the project that was later released by Hypnos records as ‘The Martian Chronicles’, and appears in a shorter form on the album.
I hope you enjoy the music.
